Somethings A Buggin' Me

I live in a beautiful state, green for the most part, mountains for the most part and lots of trees as well as the wild and beautiful Pacific Ocean.  From one end of Oregon to the other the freeways have a beautiful view. Even the flat and dry areas have something to look at, at least in my opinion.  We are a state that recycles. In every town and rest area as well as campgrounds and such there are trash receptacles. I know we have been taught not to litter, to clean up after ourselves when in the outdoors, to recycle when possible and to respect the property of others.

So why do I see things like this? What is wrong with our society that people find it so much easier to roll down their windows and toss that gum wrapper, soda can or cup, dirty diaper, etc. out the window instead of dropping it in a trash can at their destination? I just don't understand it. The photo above was at a camp ground and of course this is just pure laziness as is all trash that is carelessly tossed around.

Sure there are fines but it is pretty difficult to enforce when you know not where it came from. We have roadside crews that provide litter patrol for community service. There is a youth patrol hired each summer by the Oregon Department of Transportation. We also have many groups that are in the Adopt A Highway program.  Yet still I see along every road and freeway litter on a weekly basis. Every day something new seems to find it way along the side of our country road. It makes me sick to see all this even with all the good and concerned people out there trash is still  building up.

When are people going to wake up?

Rant over.

Ugh. I know. Its awful. Around here the big thing is the plastic grocery bags...we have such flat, open land that they just blow all over...they get stuck in the farmers fields and just make a huge mess. Not to mention they are horrible for the environment...ugh.

Scoot over, I'm jumping up on that soapbox with you.
I guess I was taught better than that. It is pure laziness and disrespect!

It never ceases to amaze me, the laziness of some people. Just plain laziness.

Ugh, I agree with you completely. I can't even stand letting a gum wrapper fall out of my car onto the ground, let alone chuck crap out the window. It's bizarre how lazy people are.

It's the same way here and irks me to no end.

Oh Vonda - how about the truckers' pee bottles thrown on the freeway - absolutely gross!

It's so sad, I don't understand it either. So many people in this country don't appreciate what they have that's for sure. Some never have. I guess educating our children and their children and so on is our only hope.

Never.....ALL people will never wake up, I'm convinced of that. Hopefully, the majority will. There's trash in the roadsides in my state, too. Iowa has the nickel deposit return on aluminum cans and plastic bottles, and still they can be found tossed in the ditches.

I'm with you.

I've been known to pick up trash that someone has tossed out their car window (while sitting stationary) and throw it back inside, with a polite "You dropped something."

Gotta be careful doing that though. Some people have no sense of humour...

Oh yes, this is a rant I want to participate in. We used to teach anti-littering and recycling in elementary school. It showed in our neighborhood. Now if you ask a kid to pick up what they thoughtless drop as they walk along, you get nothing but guff and grief. Why are we so disgustingly lazy and messy and thoughtless. After traveling in Europe where roadways are clean, our country's roads are an embarassment.

Good rant, Vonda.

My biggest pet littering peeve is people tossing cig buts out the windows and into the grass. They seem to think that's not littering, but those filters can take many years to degrade, and some won't ever because they are made with chemicals or plastics.

And then there is the fire danger out here. Many fires are started because of careless smokers who toos their butts into the dry drought affected grass.

And then there are the idiot smokers who toss their cigg butts into the sand at the playground, where children dig their hands and feet into and build sand castles. How nasty when a child picks up their butt and tries to eat it or plays with it. Disgusting!

If you ask me people who smoke and are inconsiderate are the biggest BUTTS of them all.

I have a lot of faults but littering is not one of them - at least not littering outside. One look inside my car would let you know I don't throw things out the window! I've never understood why folks litter our beautiful world.
By the way, I've never been to Oregon but have always heard it's absolutely beautiful!

maybe there ought to be a damn litter guy in your town with a ruler and measure garbage ...any over 12 inches gets a letter from the litter committee, leitter from the letter commiteee, ps the razor was in a DRaWER AND THE SOUND TRASPIREED FROM THE DRAWER through the cabinet to the wall, and i still don't know how it had movement, it was supposed to be inanimate

Yeah, the campgound fireplace thing drives me crazy - I can't tell you how many times I've seen used disposable diapers thrown into the fire and left there, unburned. It's disGUSTing. Some people just don't think...while others simply don't care. Sad.

I know exactly how you feel! We do a lot of fishing/camping and find other people's trash all of the time. It is disgusting the way some people treat the land! My daughter and I will go around with trash bags and gloves cleaning up what others have left behind. I can't stand leaving it there. Also those very same people will pitch a fit if a camp site or fishing area is closed due to abuse! Some people need a wake-up call!!

Pet peeves! I HATE seeing litter! My kids and I will sometimes grab a bag and pick up litter if we're in a public place. Horrid stuff. You're right - it's laziness.

Makes me mad too!! Just pure laziness is what causes it! And total disregard for others.

I'm hearing you Egghead! WA has those crews in the summer too, but there should not be a need!
EXCEPT~just watched a Primetime show...recyclers are losing money. Showed Oregon recyclers suffering bad and the piles are growing!

Goodness, I'm behind on your blog!
Texas has a motto--"Don't mess with Texas". It was started as an anti-litter campaign by the highway dept.
We have an adopt-a-mile program like you as well.

I've never seen anyone toss stuff out a window, but dumping certainly takes place. I also see stuff blow out of the beds of pickups.

Unfortunately, I think the clueless will always be among us. ;(
