Potted meat.  Mmmm. Utterly disgusting delicious. My mother used to fix us the dreaded spam sandwiches when we were young and I can still vividly recall the coating of fat left on the roof of my mouth when I finished gagging  swallowing this down. I absolutely hated them and I still do. I can not bring myself to eat this stuff. Another favorite of hers was deviled ham. Oh my stomach just churns when I think of these.

So the ingredients in Spam are Beef Tripe, Mechanically Separated Chicken, Beef Hearts, Partially Defatted Cooked Beef Fatty Tissue, Meat Broth, Vinegar, Salt, Flavoring, Sugar, Sodium Nitrite.  I know, I know. We probably eat worse than this without even knowing it. Mostly because I choose not to look at the labels . But somehow this make me want to hurl just thinking about it.

So did you know that there are many recipes out there for Spam? Here is what I found doing a quick google.

*Barbecue SPAM Muffins
* Curried SPAM Pilaf
* SPAM Ala Orange
* SPAM Breakfast Bagels
* SPAM Broccoli Pecan Salad
* SPAM Cupcakes
* SPAM Corn Pudding
* SPAM Fajitas
* SPAM Musubi
* SPAM Swiss Pie
* SPAM Western Bean Soup
* Wild Rice and SPAM

Makes you want to just hurry to the kitchen and bake up something. I even ran across Pork Brains in Milk Gravy, a "food" that contains 1170% of your recommended daily allowance of cholesterol (3500mg per can). It comes in a can as well.

Pardon me. I must race to the toilet.

THANKS! Your blog has now become a part of my New Year's weight loss program. Oh excuse me...where are my manners. You don't know me, but I feel like I know you because you often comment on my dear friend Kristi's blog. I see that you are in education and like to sew. I am currently a junior majoring in education. I am also teaching myself how to sew. What a small blog world! Well any way feel free to stop by my place.....It's a lot cleaner than it was in the pic on Kristis blog.

Hurk!! I feel the same way about Spam! But for some reason...and I don't know MIL(the Junebugg) loves to have a deviled Spam sandwich! I think it's cause she grew up in a time where it was pretty cool to have dinner in a can? I myself have never eaten the stuff....but I will eat a fried Bologna sandwich!!!

Mmmmm - Spam cupcakes! What kind of frosting do you put on those? Spicy mustard frosting and sprinkling of candied onions!

I grew up in a working stepmom family, so spam was a popular food to cook with. Fast and basically prepared, and cheap. I've probably had everyone one of those recipes. And my stepmom even packed my lunches with Spam sandwiches.
We used Spam when we went camping. They actually weren't too bad grilled on a campfire...

I can't even stomach the idea of eating now that I'm older. gah!

But did you know Hawaiians LOVE spam?? Many restaurants serve spam in Hawaii. The locals eat them every day just like fast food hamburgers.
Even some gourmet restaurants serve spam on their menu and charge big bucks for spam diner.

Can you imagine???

Eewww...I feel for you! We never had Spam in the house, thank gawd. My Mom is a nurse, so I think she was pretty conscious about the food she served us. That's not to say that everything was lo-cal, or fat free, by any means.

My cross to bear was red meat. I've always hated it and was forced to sit at the table, long after everyone else had left, and finish my meat that had long since gone cold. My Mom would eventually leave the room, and I would 'sneak' it into the garbage. A way of saving face for both of us.

Ok, Pork Brains in Milk Gravy---eewwww!

I used to love Spam as a little girl (fried). That was before I knew what was in it.

In Hawaii, they go nuts for the stuff. Even Spam sushi.
