Step Away From The Pool

The farmer and I were leaving to go to town when he spied something by our pool.

Now have you ever heard of a hawk swimming or at least contemplating taking a few laps around?

He actually let me get about three feet from him. This is known as a Coopers Hawk or just a plain old chicken hawk. It is unusual for hawks to just hang around while there are people close by but this guy seemed to just be waiting for something.

"Maybe if I hide behind this blade of grass they won't notice." I think he was waiting for us to leave so he could make a visit to his little hen friends.

I say, are you a chicken hawk son?

Very curious.

I loved the chicken hawk fellow on Disney. He took himself so seriously, it was hilarious...something to remember as I go through my day today...

Great photos! We have lots of hawks here in our little valley. One was circling the chicken coop this morning......but they can't get to the chickens because the coop is covered with netting...it was interesting to watch him/her just glide around above it though.

I think as long as you're not a chicken you have nothing, and you don't try to get between him and the chickens, you have nothing to fear....

Neat picture-hope your chicks stayed safe.

Wow - great photos of the hawk! They're really amazing! Are your chickas penned up nice and safe? We have one that lives in our back yard, so I know we'll have to really make sure our pen is secure, and we're out there with them when they free-range (if we let them!)

LOL!! fun pictures you did a great job you are a stealth photographer.

Hi all,

Our chickens are penned up in a completely enclosed chicken yard with a roof. They only free range when we are home because we have raccoons, possums and coyotes around here. So the hawk came up empty taloned..ha ha!

Really, you shouldn't let your hens drink margaritas on top of the hen house. Look at the type of company they attract.

when you said chicken hawk, the cartoon was all I could think about!

Great shots! What is it about the animals out at your guys' house being so mellow, allowing pictures to be snapped??? I LOVE those cartoons!

I say, I say, son. Foghorn Leghorn. So enjoyable.

I think the Foghorn Leghorn size difference is really pretty close. The Swainsons isn't really big enough to carry off a grown chicken, but chicks are another matter.
Soooo cool that you got such close up shots. I love those strange encounters we sometimes can be a part of.
